Responsive Design is no longer an Option - It's a MUST

Responsive web design. It’s that mysterious bit of coding magic that makes your website look good on any screen, whether it’s a PC, laptop, tablet, smartphone, or even a television. Research has proven that people love to browse the web on the go, which means your website needs to be viewable on all devices, even if the look is mobile "friendly". The problem? Not all responsive web designs are easy to use.

Focus on the Content

A responsive website needs to focus more on content than it does on images and ad blocks. The people who are viewing your phone on smaller devices need to be able to easily pick out the pieces of information they came to your site for, without excess “noise.” While a few responsive images will help, your mobile-friendly site shouldn’t rely on images alone.

Flexible Images

The images you do use need to be adaptive so that they size according to the device they’re being viewed on. This can be done in one of two ways. The first is to store several different image sizes so that your site grabs the right one for the image resolution the viewer is using. The problem is that this takes up a lot of space and requires a certain amount of bandwidth to load properly – something you can’t guarantee your viewer has. The second is to use a plug-in, like Adaptive Images, that allows for automatic resizing – a much better option for faster loading time.

Understanding Performance

Every element you add to your website slows the speed at which the website works. You need to understand your server and the needs of your potential customers. Make sure that the design of your responsive site does not exceed the bandwidth or size budget you’ve set for yourself – and that future changes and modifications stay within that range as well. This will ensure your site loads properly, even for those on older, slower devices.

Use Media Queries

Media queries allow you to change the style of the website at different points, or breakpoints, on the screen. This allows for adjustments to the width so that items fit better and are more viewable on the screen. Your web designer can insert this type of code directly into your stylesheet.

Choose a Quality Host

It’s silly, but it’s a reality. You could have the best website on the planet, but it will completely bomb if it’s on a bad, slow server. The good news is that there are dozens of options out there – even privately owned servers. Take a look at your competitors and their sites. Which are performing best and what hosting providers are they using (you can find this online)?
